True “All-Rounders” In The Laboratory

To understand the benefits of choosing an Eppendorf multipurpose centrifuge, it's essential to understand how  microcentrifuges  differ from multipurpose centrifuges. While microcentrifuges are suitable for small-scale applications, multipurpose centrifuges offer broader capabilities. They can centrifuge not only small sample volumes and a limited variety of vessels, but an increased volume range and different vessels like  centrifuge tubes, plates,  and even bottles.

This versatility is the significant benefit of Eppendorf's multipurpose centrifuges and underlines their ability to accommodate different applications. Whether you are involved in molecular biology, cell culture, or protein purification, our centrifuges provide reliable and efficient performance.

With a single instrument and well-designed adapters, you can seamlessly integrate centrifugation of vessels from 0.2 to 1000 mL. By investing in a multipurpose centrifuge from Eppendorf, you can not only save valuable laboratory space and costs but also perform efficient and streamlined workflows.

Find the Right Multipurpose Centrifuge for Your Lab

Selecting a multipurpose centrifuge involves considering several factors. Working in a research laboratory, clinical setting, or industrial environment determines important requirements for choosing the perfect multipurpose centrifuge and can significantly enhance your workflow and productivity.

The most important factors for selecting a multipurpose centrifuge: Capacity and speed requirements. Will you be working with small sample volumes or larger quantities? Do you need high-speed centrifugation, or is a lower speed sufficient for your needs?

Swing bucket or Fixed-Angle Rotor?

When choosing a multipurpose centrifuge, it is important to understand the differences between  fixed-angle and swing bucket centrifuge rotors. In swing bucket centrifuge rotors, the buckets holding the samples swing out to a horizontal position during centrifugation, allowing particles to sediment along the bottom of the tube. Due to the longer pathway this horizontal separation is particularly effective for density gradient centrifugation, where precise separation of components is required.

In contrast, fixed-angle centrifuge rotors hold the tubes at a constant angle, typically 25-40 degrees, causing particles to sediment along the side and bottom of the tube. As a result of the rigid design, fixed-angle rotors can withstand much higher gravitational forces. Therefore, they are often used for pelleting applications at high speeds. Both types therefore have their own advantages and are suitable for different applications.

Need to Switch Between Different Rotor Types?

Depending on your specific lab requirements you may need to switch between these rotor types and rely on fast changes of vessel formats. The ability to quickly change the centrifuge setup allows greater flexibility and adaptability. Most of the Eppendorf multipurpose centrifuges are flexible per design. Experience the Eppendorf QuickLock® ecosystem that makes these repetitive tasks quick, easy, and also reduces ergonomic stress.

Thanks to the modular adapters for some of our swing bucket centrifuge rotors – including Centrifuges 5804/5804 R, 5810/ 5810 R, 5910 Ri, and 5920 R – labs can use the same centrifuge for plates (e.g. a 96-well plate centrifuge) and tubes. This ensures efficient processing of multiple samples simultaneously.
