The Concentrator plus has various functions for the concentration of samples or for the removal of solvents. How is it used?

You can operate the Concentrator plus as a Concentrator, as a Desiccator or as a Centrifuge. The Concentrator function enables the quick concentration of samples via vacuum (fast evaporation of the solvent) and centrifugation (prevents foaming over/sample loss) in the rotor. The Desiccator function enables fast drying under vacuum conditions without using a rotor, e.g. for filter papers. The sample can be placed directly into the rotor chamber; the rotor shaft doesn't rotate during the run. With the Centrifuge function, the rotor spins, but the rotor chamber is not evacuated.

Which temperatures can one set with the Concentrator plus?

The temperatures "--", 30, 45 and 60 °C can be set by using the temp key whereby "--" symbolizes no temperature control. The temperature can also be changed during operation..

What braking functions does the Concentrator plus have?

The braking function can be set with the brake key. It can be set On or Off. - If it is set On, the rotor is decelerated gentle at the end of the run. - If it is set Off, the rotor is decelerated as fast as possible at the end of the run.

Which parameters of the Concentrator plus can be changed during the run?

The braking function, the temperature and the total run time can be changed during the run. The changed parameters are adjusted immediately.

Is it possible to ventilate the Concentrator plus during the run?

The ventilation valve is opened by pressing the mode/vent key during the run. Air flows in and rinses the pump and tube system. Prior to concluding daily work and upon finishing the last run, we recommend pressing the button once for a few seconds in order to remove residual condensation from the pump.

Is there a recommended ambient temperature for the operation of the Concentrator plus?

The ambient temperature for the operation of the Concentrator plus may range from 15 °C to a maximum of 35 °C.

What rotational speeds can be set in the Concentrator plus and which g-force does this correspond to?

The rotational speed for all rotors is 1,400 rpm. It cannot be changed. The g-force varies according to the position of the tubes in the rotors between 130 and 250 x g.

Can I retrofit the Concentrator plus basic device into a complete system?

No, this is not possible for the Concentrator plus, only for the predecessor Concentrator 5301.

Which properties must an external vacuum pump have in order to be able to be connected to the Concentrator plus basic device? Which hoses do you recommend? How do I connect it?

In order to ensure the functionality of the Concentrator plus, an external vacuum pump must have a suction capacity of at least 1.9 m³/h at 50 Hz or 2.1 m³/h at 60 Hz. Each pump used should be able to contain a maximum ultimate pressure of at least We would recommend to use PTFE hoses. The solenoid valve for the control of an external pump with the Concentrator basic device is resistant against water and alcoholics. Instructions on how to connect a vacuum pump to the Concentrator plus can be found at "Notes&Papers" in the Userguide 030 "Connecting an external vacuum pump to the Concentrator plus".

Which cleaning method do you recommend for the Concentrator plus and its accessoiries (rotors, emission condenser)?

Neutral, gentle cleaning agents and alcohol-based disinfectants may be used for the cleaning and disinfection of the device. This is applied to the housing, the rotor chamber, the rotors and the emission condenser. Rotors could additionally be autoclaved (121 °C, 20 min). The procedure for handling of the emission condenser is described in the operating manual. The mains plug must always be disconnected prior to cleaning. It should principally be prevented that aqueous, saline solutions be allowed to dry, and the longer term effects of acids or lyes on the material avoided.

What purpose do the feet of the rotors F-45-48-11 and F-45-72-8 of the Concentrator plus have?

The small metal feet can be screwed into the corresponding bores of these rotors. They ensure that the tubes are not pushed out of the bores when one places the rotor on the workbench. The rotors can be used in the Concentrator plus with the feet. The feet should be re- tightened regularly.

Why should a warm-up phase be carried out prior to starting to work with the Concentrator plus?

The membrane vacuum pump reaches the suction capacity and ultimate pressures given in the "Technical Data" after a warm up phase of the Concentrator plus of approx. 15 min. Therefore, carrying out a warm-up phase makes sure that the application following will be started most efficiently. Furthermore it reduces condensation of liquids inside of the Concentrator plus (pump, hoses, rotor chamber).

How quickly can samples be concentrated /evaporated in the Concentrator plus?

The time required for the concentration / evaporation of a sample depends on the properties of the sample itself (vapor pressure, boiling point, etc.), the quantity of liquid per vessel, the type of vessel used, the number of vessels, the temperature used during evapuration, etc. . Therefore, it is not possible to give a precise answer on this topic.

What chemicals can be concentrated with the Concentrator plus?

The Concentrator was developed to concentrate or dry samples with DNA, RNA, nucleotides and proteins, which are found in ethanolic or aqueous solutions.

Is it possible to evaporate ether with the Concentrator plus?

No. The Eppendorf Concentrator plus may not be used in a potentially explosive environment and must be operated in a safe, adequately ventilated environment or beneath an extraction hood. Chemicals that can potentially create an explosive atmosphere may not be used in the Concentrator plus.

Is it possible to connect a cold trap to the Concentrator plus?

You can connect any commercially available cold trap to our Concentrator plus. The cold trap can be used behind the pump in place of the emission condenser with the supplied tube.

Can 0.2 mL tubes be used in the Concentrator plus?

Yes, one can centrifuge 0.2 mL tubes in the 1.5 mL rotor F-45-48-11 with the help of an adapter #5425715005 (order no North America #022636260), in the 0.5 mL rotor F-45-72-8 with the help of the adapter #5425 723.008 (order no North America #022636286).

What is the max. plate height for the swing-bucket rotor A-2-VC?

The height of 27 mm for plates may not be exceeded.

To what height may the plates be filled in the swing-bucket rotor A-2-VC?

The wells of the plates should only be filled to a maximum of approx. 2/3 of the max. filling volume. (During centrifugation, the menisci stand angled in the tubes at the edge of the plates. This is caused by the centrifugal force and is unavoidable.).

Is it possible to dry filter plates by using a vacuum in the Concentrator plus?

Yes, the Concentrator plus can also be operated as a desiccator. The rotor chamber is thereby evacuated, but the rotor does not turn.

What do I need to consider when working with the Concentrator plus complete system with junction for external devices (#5305000614) and a connected gel dryer?

On a complete system with junction for external devices, a gel dryer can be run in parallel to the operation as a concentrator/desiccator and/or used separately. For parallel work we recommend the V-HV and D-HV modes. If the gel dryer is run separately, you should use D-HV mode in order to protect the drive. In contrast to the concentrator or desiccator function, open the tap of the gel dryer connection before operation. The knob thereby points in the flow direction. Close it again after operation. When the gel dryer is operated without the concentrator or desiccator function the device lid must be closed as a vacuum otherwise cannot be generated. Then proceed as with the concentrator function. Please note the solvent properties when carrying out work. When running several devices in parallel on a vacuum system and/or in combination with a gel dryer, an explosive gas mixture can develop in the vacuum system. Only carry out parallel operations with identical solvents or solvents that evaporate in a non-hazardous manner.

How do I recognize that the lid of the Concentrator plus can be opened?

If the Concentrator plus is shut off the lid is locked and can not be opened. If the Concentrator plus is switched on the lid can be opened. The control lamp "Lid" (placed at the right side next to the key pad) is lighted up green. During a run of the Concentrator plus the lid is also locked and can not be opened.

How do I open the lid of the Concentrator plus in case of a power failure?

In the event of power failure, the ventilation valve will automatically open and the chamber will aerate to atmospheric pressure before the rotor stops spinning. Locate the pinhole on the right side of the housing, near the top rear corner. Insert a paper clip and the lid will open.

The coated lid improves durability by providing chemical resistance against acids and organic solvents. The Eppendorf concentrator Vacufuge plus is available in three configurations, designed to meet your individual laboratory needs:
• The basic Vacufuge plus system for connection to an external vacuum pump
• The Vacufuge plus complete system with an integrated, solvent-resistant, maintenance, and oil-free PTFE diaphragm vacuum pump and condensation trap

Vacuum concentrator with excellent versatility

The Vacufuge plus vacuum centrifuge has three main operation modes: Concentrate, centrifuge, and desiccate – to cover all your application needs. Processing times are reduced by up to 20 % thanks to the ability to choose between three application modes that correspond to sample solvent (aqueous, alcohol or high vapor pressure). The choice of four heating levels (ambient, 30 °C, 45 °C, 60 °C) enables safe and efficient concentration of various samples. When working with delicate samples you also have the option to turn off the brake function.
