Plan International

The children’s aid association Plan International is an independent organization that is actively involved in development work and humanitarian assistance in more than 50 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.* It works to improve the long-term living conditions of children and their families regardless of religion or political persuasion. In the process, Plan International focuses on child-oriented self-help projects that are financed by sponsorships, individual donations, public funds and partnerships with companies. In its role as the national organization of Plan International, Plan International Deutschland e.V. is the recipient of the donations and has been certified according to the German standard of the Central German Institute for Social Issues (DZI - Deutsches Zentralinstitut für soziale Fragen).

Background

Article 2 of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child calls for girls and boys to have equal opportunities. Nonetheless, many girls around the world suffer from discrimination. In many families, access to education, health care and social participation continue to be reserved for boys. For instance, roughly two-thirds of the world’s illiterate people are women, and millions of young women continue to be married before their 18th birthdays.

Support equal rights, participation, protection and health care for girls around the world by donating your collected epPoints to the girls’ fund of Plan International. Here you can discover how and where your donation will provide help.

Partnership between Eppendorf and Plan International

On the occasion of its 75th anniversary, Eppendorf initiated the Improving Life Program and has been supporting a humanitarian project at Plan International with a donation of €75,000 every year since 2021. The first activity of this type was a project called Clean Water for Ghana.

Eighty-nine percent of the people in the project regions Eastern, Central and Volta now have access to clean drinking water. Places where residents – particularly women and children – once walked for hours to get water from rivers or other unsafe sources can now use 46 water distribution sites located in the communities themselves. Restroom and washing facilities were installed in 36 schools.

You, too, have the opportunity to help children in all parts of the world and assist girls in particular. They need this support because they continue to face discrimination in many regions of the world. Donate your collected epPoints to the girls’ fund of Plan International.

Safer Cities for Girls in Vietnam:
Even though Vietnam has created a legal framework governing equal opportunity for and the protection of girls, attacks carried out in particular in public and in public transportation are widespread. As part of the project called Safer Cities for Girls, security cameras were installed in the buses that travel the streets of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City for the purpose of providing girls with extra protection. Plan International has worked together with 54 youth clubs in order to inform young people about their rights and to systematically create participation opportunities for girls in politics and urban planning.

Similar projects have also been carried out in Egypt, India and Peru.

Girls network: Together, we are strong in Peru
In Peru, especially indigenous girls and women are frequently targets of discrimination. This is why Plan International supports equal opportunity and political participation by girls and women in this project. Through training and sex education, young people – particularly girls and young women – are encouraged to play an active role. Barriers to participation by young people are to be removed through the sensitization of the general public and the inclusion of local officials. The work of indigenous women in networks is promoted on the international and national levels to ensure that they are more closely involved in decision-making processes and have a voice in international organizations, networks and discussions.
